Shower update

I know it's been several weeks since I updated my progress on the shower renovation. Good news, it is fully functional, and I'm able to use it on a daily basis. There are a few minor details left to be done (crown moulding, paint the ceilings, install new light and exhaust fan, glass doors) but I'll get to those soon. Here's how it progressed:

The orange is a waterproof membrane that goes over the floor and seams using the thin set, so this thing should be somewhat waterproof. Once this was done (and man it was messy) I used a Portland cement product that further waterproofed all the shower surfaces. It's mixed with water and dries an army green

Next came the tile....

Add the grout and toilet....

and viola! almost there. This shower area is so small it is impossible to get it all in one picture. More once I'm done....

Have you seen....

Snuggies for dogs! What I find humorous is the caption, written as if the dog can read it.

Progress and setbacks

Why is it when you're working on your own house that things seem to take longer? When I'm doing a clients house I'm up and out the door by 8, this week I've been lucky to get up by 7:30-7:45. Once I do my devotional, have coffee, catch up on the news, man routine, it's 9:30 or so. Today was no exception. After much consideration, online research, I wasn't crazy about doing a shower pan. I had found pans that are made from polysomthin that you can tile right over but they want $566 and up for those. They must be mighty proud. The other option has been doing it old school, sloped mortar base, polysomthin "pan" (liner) and then another screed morter base on top of that. Then I found a company that has a Pro Slope, which is merely white Styrofoam and cardboard pitched properly to the drain. Of course you have to put the liner in and a mortar base on top of that. I thought I could do this and found out that the Tile Center in Columbia had this product in stock. Check out their home page as the family story is quite interesting. Anyway, I gave them $69 for the slope, and with the liner and other supplies they ended up with about $160 of our money.

I guess I still wasn't sure about the shower floor as I found myself back on the computer looking at another system, suggested to me by a fella named Stan at Palmetto Tile. He suggested that I check out this company called Schluter and they had an easy, fail safe method. I followed his advise but their videos don't want to play continuously on my laptop. They refresh about every 10 seconds making it almost impossible to watch. I have watched many videos researching this shower project so I'm sure it's not me. Anyway, due this flaw I blew Stan and his suggestion off.

Yes, there's more to this story and I'll wrap it up tomorrow, along with more pictures of my progress. The picture above is what I finally got done today, one wall with hardie board and a niche.

Let there be LIGHT!

Sometimes while you're do a remoldel you get inspired, and today was no exception. Seeing how the shower is basically a small walk in closet, we felt we needed to add some light, and what better way than to add glass blocks. It wasn't that difficult and they even have them now where all you need is the manufacturers track and silicone and some luck and what do you know, light!

So it was a good day today. Got the window in, caulked and primed. Hope to have it painted and the house touched up by the end of the week. Here's how the inside looks:

aah, relax

Didn't get much done this weekend, picked up some supplies at Lowe's on Saturday and had kind of a busy day at church. Back at it tomorrow.
